About Our Worship

Worship at St. Stephen’s follows a pattern set by the Book of Common Prayer of The Episcopal Church. We kneel for prayer and sing hymns, but you may participate however you feel comfortable—bow, stand, pray, make the sign of the cross, or simply sit. We welcome you as you are and offer a loving place to encounter God.

The first portion of the service is filled with hymns and Bible readings from the Old Testament, Psalms, New Testament and Gospel. Midway through we do what’s called passing the peace. The officiant says, “The peace of the Lord be always with you.” The congregation responds with, “And also with you.” Then we move out of our seats and great each other by shaking hands (or hugging if you prefer). This takes about 5 minutes, then we return to our seats, and the service continues with the offering and communion.
