There is one God who creates all things, redeems humanity from sin and death, and renews all people as children of God. The Episcopal Church proclaims Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and seeks to follow his teachings and example. The mission of the Church is the restoration of all people to unity with God and one another in Christ. Every person contributes to the richness and vitality of the faith community.
The Episcopal Church is a member of the world-wide Anglican Communion, with 70 million members in 163 countries. Episcopalians are a community of Christians bound together by: the belief that Holy Scripture contains the foundation of Christian faith and thought. Through ancient and contemporary stories, Scripture connects people to Jesus and his teachings, revealing God's hope and call through life in community.
These core beliefs are expressed through:
Worship and parish programs
Outreach to the community
Seeking God's love through study and prayer
Offering time, talents, and resources for God's work in the world
Worship brings people together to hear God's Word, offer prayers, and celebrate God's presence. All are welcome to participate, as worship is central to life in the Christian community.
Holy Scripture is the foundation of Episcopal worship. Services follow the liturgies found in the Book of Common Prayer and include readings from Scripture in every service. Many of the Church's prayers and hymns are rooted in Scripture.

Baptism is the means by which we become members of the community of believers, defined in the New Testament as the Body of Christ. Just as Jesus was baptized with water by John the Baptist, we include people in the community of faith by baptizing them with water. Following a series of questions, responses and prayers, the priest pours water on the candidate. The sign of the cross may be made on their forehead with blessed oil. In the Episcopal Church, a person is baptized only once.

Please email Fr. Curt if you or a family member or friend is interested in baptism.

Confirmation is when a baptized person, who has been instructed in the Christian faith, makes a mature commitment to God within a worship setting and receives a special blessing and prayer from a bishop.

Holy Matrimony is Christian marriage, in which a two people enter into a life-long union and make promises before God in a worship service.
St. Stephen’s leadership and congregation affirm the use of the church’s sanctuary for all marriage rites authorized by The Episcopal Church, including those for gender and sexual minority couples.
People are sometimes surprised to discover that the Episcopal Church has very definite and clear Canon Laws and Diocesan policies governing the Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage in the Church. Anyone contemplating marriage at St. Stephen’s Church should be aware of these requirements.
A Declaration of Intention must be completed six months before the proposed marriage date.
Due to the penitential nature of the season, there will be no weddings in Lent and weddings in Advent are discouraged.
It is expected that at least one of the persons to be married is an active member of St. Stephen’s Church for six months prior to the wedding.
Counseling sessions with the clergy are required to explore the theological, spiritual, and emotional aspects of marriage. Sometimes additional counseling will be performed by licensed counselors. All counseling must be concluded at least 2 months prior to the marriage date.
Every priest of the Episcopal Church has the discretion to decline to preside or officiate at any marriage.
Requests from non-Episcopalians to “use” or “rent the church” cannot be honored.
Only an Episcopal priest may officiate (however, with the priest’s approval, clergy of other denominations may assist) and only The Book of Common Prayer may be used.

Our Beliefs
Funerals at St. Stephen’s are based in the celebration that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Even death itself cannot stop God’s love, demonstrated in Jesus victory over the grave. Our burial services therefore resemble an Easter service, celebrating the resurrection and praying in thanksgiving.
This celebration, however, does not make our grief wrong or unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. We both rejoice in God’s love for those who have died and comfort each other in mourning.
At The Time of Death
The death of a member of the church should be reported as soon as possible to the church. One does not need to be a member of St. Stephen’s in order to have a burial service here. If death is imminent, it is always appropriate for a member of the clergy to be present to pray and offer Holy Communion.
If you have lost a loved one, the clergy and other pastoral care leaders are here for you. Please contact the office at (409) 892-4227 or office@ssecbmt.org. You will need to schedule an appointment to meet with the church to plan the burial service. Even though it is difficult and stressful, the church highly encourages members to discuss and plan their burial services with loved ones in advance. This eases the burden of grieving families in choosing the various elements for the service. We are happy to schedule time for this planning.
